Are you doing too much push versus pull? Have you been skipping leg day for weeks in a row? Or perhaps you’ve been overworking everything else and forgetting to give your core some extra TLC?
The truth is, this is probably going to be the case more often than not. Because life happens above and beyond the gym. Unless you’re a fitness coach by profession (or enthusiasm), it can be very hard to figure out whether you’ve been doing too much pull or too few lunges.
Which is why we’ve developed our brand new Functional Profile to help you stay on track with your fitness, so you don’t have to spend hours figuring it out for yourself.
Functional Profile
Your Functional Profile is composed of 7 fundamental movement patterns that together define our ability to respond to the functional demands of our daily lives. Those are –
Push
Pull
Hinge
Squat
Lunge
Core
Rotate
Each movement pattern is produced through the coordination of various muscle groups and joints, and exercising according to these patterns provides us with a very effective and efficient way of training. For a refresher on what those are, you can read my post on functional training and movement patterns here.
Functional Scorecard
We built a proprietary AI algorithm that helps us analyze each of our daily workouts and the exercises within to create a functional scorecard for each workout. Every time you perform a workout, you’re exercising a specific set of functional movement patterns, and receive a functional score added to your profile right after!
Our AI algorithm builds a unique Functional Profile for you based on an analysis of your workout history.
Here’s a little preview of what it looks like!

You will be able to start viewing your Functional Profile directly on your Profile Page with our next update, slated for next month!
Interpreting your Functional Profile
If you’ve been skipping Leg Day far too often, a quick glance at your functional profile will inform you of your misdemeanor right away.
Naturally, this functional profile is representative of your actual exercise history only for all the workouts that you’re logging inside the APP. So if you’re doing extra workouts outside of the APP, your actual functional profile might look different.
Your functional profile is evolving with every new workout you log. You never need to attempt to reach a perfectly shaped heptagon. That will remain unattainable as long as you train consistently because every new workout that you do will bias one or more of the patterns right away.
For the sake of achieving a well-balanced functional fitness profile, we recommend doing at least 3-4 sessions of our weekly training program to address each of the movement patterns uniformly and consistently.
Functional training for health is not that hard.
Push and pull equal amounts, and do your squats and hinges. Never skip the lunges, and occasionally give your core some extra love, and you’re doing great.
Your next question might be… how many reps? How much time? Which exercises precisely and when?! Indeed, that’s the harder part.
If you’re keen to take out the thinking and simply get to the doing, we can help! Follow our weekly training program on the RISE APP (or at the studio if you live in Shanghai) and we’ll help you cover all your functional bases while keeping it diverse and fun!
Important to remember
The difficulty of staying on track is far too understated. The gym is important, but living your life is your priority.
Even if you’re following our weekly program schedule, it can be tricky to stay consistent with your workout days on a weekly basis when sometimes your boss asks you to stay for a few extra hours, or your kid has a birthday party that needs organizing.
There will be hits & misses.
The important thing is to give yourself some grace and come back to it as soon as life allows it, even if it takes a few weeks.
A few weeks are nothing if you consider that your health & fitness journey is LIFE LONG.
My mission is to support you in that journey and to create the tools that will empower you to take control of yours.
If you’re intrigued, you can try the RISE APP completely for FREE for the first 7 days.
