What physical training for health isn’t

I’ve been looking around at what’s trending in the fitness industry and found that we cater to ZERO trends. It would appear that I run a very non-trendy physical training facility in Shanghai called RISE.

Our training principles revolve around exercises and activities that specifically improve people’s physical health, and those simultaneously prevent me from running any of these trendy classes, here’s why.

1. Weight Loss Camp

We have none of those. We find the ideas & thoughts around weight loss to be pretty toxic and deleterious to mental health. Although, the kind of exercises and physical training programs we run may result in some weight loss because of muscle gain. Who knows. We’re not preoccupied with that, we’re occupied with building muscles and catering to people’s healthy joints.

2. Sweaty Sessions

You will never hear us talk about working out to get sweaty. Going to a sauna or spending some time in the Shanghai summer for a mere 30 minutes will give you the desired result – you won’t need to pay for a coach or an expensive group class for that. There appears to be no correlation between sweat and health (even though it rhymes).

3. Booty-Blasting Camp

We don’t do any booty blasting. We train glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, all the great hip stabilizers, both unilaterally and bilaterally. And we train them at least once a week specifically, all year round, to build strength and size across your leg muscles. The aftermath may result in a ‘booty blast’ – although this depends entirely on your efforts, consistency, and a lot of genetics.

4. Waist Slimming Classes

We might even have the opposite. Oops. Simply for the sheer amount of general and specific core training we prescribe, we’ve noticed people’s abdominal muscles actually grow in size. We’re bulletproofing them to both protect the spine and withstand heavy loads. Their visibility on the other hand depends on what’s going on their plates. No one’s really checking, we’re too busy lifting heavy weights.

5. Muscle-up Classes

We cater to the general population, most of whom do not have the ability to pull their body weight up for 5 reps in a row (or even 1). In all the literature I have perused regarding functional training for health, not one of them gave any specific mention to muscle-ups. So we’ve parked this one for the time being.

6. XFit Sports-specific Movements

According to our standards for physical training for health, XFit sports-specific movements don’t make the cut. We screen for the health of the muscles & joints in our members across measures of strength, stability & mobility, and find that most do not meet the baseline. Our job is to bring them back to health so that we can then proceed to live life large.

We are classic, like a shot of espresso or an americano. We don’t serve herb-infused matcha latte on crushed ice.

What I mean is, that we train for health & longevity. Functional training to grow & nurture the body’s function.

Physical training for health sounds boring, but it really isn’t. I think we’ve cracked the code and it’s actually pretty fun. Most of our members train pretty consistently, in fact, it’s hard work to get them to take a rest day. So you might be surprised.
